- General Information-

As a consequence of steadily increasing electronic waste and its impact on health and environmental pollution, in 2003 the EU announced to its members two legal directives that are to be introduced on July 1st, 2006.

ROHS directives

Directive 2002/95/EC on the restrictions of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

The aim of this directive is to restrict the use of hazardous substances contained in electrical and electronic equipment and to contribute to the protection of human health including the environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

The focus for this Directive is on prevention via design.

WEEE Directives

Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment.

The purpose of this directive is to control the ‘end of life’ waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), and in addition, the reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of such equipment so as to reduce the disposal of waste.

The focus of this directive is on recycling after End Of Life (EOL).
